October 2005 South-Asian Earthquake
– Reconstruction of Schools
The 7.6 magnitude earthquake that rocked AJK and Northern Pakistan completely devastated the basic physical infrastructure. The earthquake inflicted colossal losses on READ Foundation School System in the badly-hit Muzaffarabad, Bagh and Poonch districts of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, as:
| Schools destroyed | 138 |
| Students affected | 22,441 |
| Students died | 645 |
| Teachers affected | 1,067 |
| Teachers died | 14 |
With the partnership and support of parents, communities, and local as well as international philanthropic organizations, READ Foundation resumed educational activities in its destroyed schools within two weeks after the earthquake. The quality of education and care that READ provides in its schools has attracted new enrolments and more than 30,000 children are presently enrolled in the earthquake-affected areas.
READ Foundation is presently working on a comprehensive program of reconstruction of these schools to help children receive education and care they need on a continuing basis in a safe and supportive environment.
Education is the key for providing these earthquake-afflicted young children with life-sustaining hope and a purpose for future.
Join us in the process of rehabilitation and reconstruction of these schools! Please ask for project proposal for rebuilding of a READ Foundation School.
